How to pay a charge by card, what happens afterwards and what if the payment fails.

Ask Classy

Step by step

  1. 1

    Open the school's Payments tab.

  2. 2

Under To pay, press Pay on the charge.

  3. 3

Enter your card details on the payment page and confirm.

  4. 4

Check the payment in Payment History in your profile.

How it works

Lets you pay your charges with the school by card from your phone or computer, without going in person.

Where charges come from. The school can issue a charge by hand, automatically each period on a recurring plan or a pack, or when you join a group that has a plan. A charge is also created when you join a plan yourself, confirm a variant in a choice, or buy a one-off plan. For every new charge you get a new-charge notification.

How to pay. Press Pay on the charge under To pay in the school's Payments tab. A secure online payment page opens where you enter your card details, they are entered with the payment provider, not in Classes. In the mobile app the page opens in a browser over the app, and after paying you are taken back to the app.

After paying. Once the payment is confirmed, the charge becomes paid, leaves To pay and the payment appears in Payment History in your profile. Confirmation comes from the payment provider, so it can take a few seconds. The school is notified that you paid.

Who can pay. Only the account holder the charge was issued to, including charges for their children. Only a pending charge can be paid, and only if the school accepts online payments; otherwise the Pay button isn't shown.

Good to know

If you don't see the Pay button, the school hasn't set up online payments: "This organisation doesn't have an online payment method configured."

If something goes wrong while opening the payment page, an error message is shown.

The school can mark a charge as paid in cash or by bank transfer, you then don't need to pay online. You get a notification that the payment was recorded.

Charge states

What each state a charge can be in means.

Helps you understand why a charge does or doesn't show in your lists.

  • Pending, the charge has been issued and not paid. Only pending charges appear in To pay, and only they can be paid.
  • Paid, the payment was confirmed online, or the school marked it paid in cash or by bank transfer. The payment shows in Payment History.
  • Cancelled, the school cancelled the charge. You don't owe it and it disappears from your lists.
  • Waived, the school let the charge go. You don't owe it and you get a notification that it was waived.

If the school recorded a cash or bank payment by mistake and reverses it, the charge becomes pending again. A payment made online can't be reversed that way.

Payment attempt outcome

What happens with each online payment attempt.

Explains the difference between a successful, a failed and an abandoned payment.

  • Completed, the money was taken. The charge becomes paid and you can open the receipt from Payment History.
  • Failed, the card was declined or the payment didn't go through. The charge stays pending and you can try again.
  • Abandoned, you closed the page or cancelled. No payment is created and the charge stays pending.

Payment notifications

The notifications you get about your charges, payments, choices and packs.

Keeps you informed without checking by hand.

  • New charge, the school issued you a charge, with the amount.
  • Overdue charge, the charge has become overdue; sent once a day over the first three days after the due date, at most three times per charge.
  • Payment recorded, the school marked a cash or bank transfer payment of yours as paid. It is not sent for a card payment you made yourself.
  • Charge waived, the school let the charge go.
  • Choose an option, the school opened a choice for you or reminds you to choose (the "Plan Choices" notification in your settings). It opens the Payments tab.
  • Renew your pack, your pack's credits expire within three days or have run out; sent once per pack, and it means the next period's charge will give you new credits.

The school can also send you a reminder about a pending charge. Which notifications you get is set in your profile.

"This organisation doesn't have an online payment method configured." message

The school doesn't accept online payments.

Explains why you can't pay online.

Shown when you hover over the "Online payments unavailable" note on a plan card. Under To pay the Pay button is simply not shown for the same reason. Charges and plans stay visible but can't be paid online until the school sets up online payments. Ask the school how to pay.

Taking you back to the app page

The page that returns you to the mobile app after paying.

Reopens the app once the payment in the browser is done.

After paying from the mobile app, the browser tries to open the app automatically. If it doesn't, press Return to app or Continue in the browser.
