How it works

Lets you invite people to a group just by sending them a link by message or email. They join with their own account, themselves, their children, or both at once.

Open it with the Join Link button above the member list. Pick a group, a link type and optionally the number of uses and how long it's valid, then press Generate Link.

Every new link is separate, creating one does not revoke the old ones. Opening and confirming a link once counts as one use, however many people (a parent and children) join in that go. Whoever opens the link has to log in (or sign up) before joining.

You need the Manage members permission.

Good to know

If the school has only one group, it is selected for you.

Closing the window resets the settings and hides the finished link, the link itself stays active, and you'll find it under Links for this group.

On this screen

Group Join Link window

The form for creating a link and the list of the group's existing links.

Keeps creating, copying and revoking a group's links in one place.

At the top it reads "Generate a link that lets someone join a group directly. Share it by message or email." Once you generate a link, the form is replaced by the finished link.

Group field

The group the link leads to.

Decides which group people who open the link will join.

Required. Until you pick a group, Generate Link is disabled and reads "Select a group first to generate a link." beneath it. Changing group hides a link you already generated, because it belongs to the previous group.

Settings section

A collapsed section with the link's number of uses and validity.

Lets you limit how many times and until when the link can be used.

It starts collapsed, and its header shows your current choice, e.g. "Unlimited · No expiry". If a value inside is invalid, the section stays open.

Number of uses field

How many times the link can be used.

Limits how many families or people can get in with one link.

Choose Unlimited (default), Single use, 5 uses, 10 uses or Custom. Custom reveals a box pre-filled with 25; enter a whole number of at least 1, otherwise you see "Enter a number, at least 1." and can't generate the link.

One use is one confirmation of the link, even if a parent enrols several children at once.

Valid for field

Until when the link works.

Stops the link automatically after a set time.

Choose No expiry (default), 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days or Custom date. The link is valid until the end of the last day. Custom date reveals a date box set 14 days ahead; the date must be today or later, otherwise you see "Pick a date in the future."

Generate Link button

Creates the link with the chosen settings.

Creates a new active link for the group.

Disabled until you pick a group, and while the number of uses or the date is invalid. On success the window shows the finished link.

"Your link is ready!" view

The finished link with a summary of its settings.

Gives you the link to copy or share and reminds you what it does.

Chips under the heading show the group, the type, the number of uses and the validity (e.g. "unlimited uses", "valid until …"). A hint under the link says "This link works once, generate another for each person or family you invite.", "This link works N times…" or "This link works an unlimited number of times." A direct link repeats the approval warning.

Copy button

Copies the link to the clipboard.

Lets you paste the link into a message or email.

The label reads Copied! for 2 seconds. If copying isn't allowed, select the link in the box and copy it by hand.

Share button

Opens your device's share menu.

Sends the link straight through a messaging app, email and so on.

Only shown on devices with built-in sharing (usually phones).

Generate another link button

Takes you back to the form for one more link.

Handy when inviting several families with separate single-use links.

Hides the link on screen (it stays active) and shows the form again with the same settings.

Links for this group list

Every link created for the selected group.

Lets you see which links still work, how often they've been used, and stop one.

It appears once you pick a group, collapsed, with the number of links beside the heading; press it to expand. Newest links are on top. Each row shows a state, an icon for the type (a direct link also reads Direct), "Created …", "Expires …" or "Never expires", and the uses ("3 of 10 uses" or "3 uses, unlimited"). With no links it reads "No links generated for this group yet."

Link state

Whether the link can still be used.

Shows at a glance which links work.

  • Active: works.
  • Used: has run out of uses.
  • Expired: its date has passed.
  • Revoked: stopped by hand.

If several apply, revoked wins over used, and used over expired.

Copy button in the list

Copies an existing link.

Lets you resend an active link without creating a new one.

Only shown for active links.

Revoke button

Stops the link for good.

Use it if the link went to the wrong person or you don't want anyone else joining with it.

Only shown for active links. It takes effect immediately, with no confirmation, and can't be undone. People who already joined stay in the group.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Request and Direct?

With Request, a public group lets the person in straight away, while a private group files a join request you have to approve. Direct lets the person in straight away, even into a private group, with no approval.

How do I stop a link I sent by mistake?

Open the window, pick the group, expand "Links for this group" and press "Revoke" next to the link.
