How it works

Keeps everything the school tells its members in one place, schedule changes, events, documents, photos. Here users read, mark as seen and comment, while staff publish from the Announcements page in the admin area.

The Announcements tab is visible to the school owner, to employees and to anyone who is a member of at least one group in the school.

Who sees which announcements:

  • The owner and employees see every announcement in the school. An employee whose access is limited to certain groups sees whole-school announcements plus those for their groups.
  • Members see whole-school announcements plus those aimed at groups they (or their child) belong to.

Announcements are listed newest first, with pinned ones always on top. They load a few at a time as you scroll down.

In the tab everyone, staff included, can only read, mark as seen and comment. Publishing, pinning, editing and deleting are on the Announcements page under Admin Actions, which you reach with the Manage button that staff with the Publish announcements permission see at the top of the tab. The admin page is the same feed, but with a New announcement button (on a phone, a round button at the top) and with pin, edit and delete buttons on every card.

Good to know

If you don't see the Announcements tab, you are not a member of any group in the school and not one of its employees.

On large screens pinned announcements sit in a column on the right; on phones and tablets they appear above the feed.

On this screen

Announcements tab in the school

The tab on the school page that holds announcements.

Opens the school's announcement feed.

It appears among the school's tabs only if you are its owner, an employee, or a member of at least one group. Otherwise the tab is not shown.

New announcement button

The button at the top of the Announcements page in the admin area that starts a new announcement.

Opens the window for creating an announcement.

It is on the Announcements page under Admin Actions, not in the school's tab. On a phone it is a round button at the top of the screen. Opens the Create announcement window. The page only opens with the Publish announcements permission.

All groups filter

Shows only announcements aimed at one chosen group.

Helps you quickly find the announcements for a particular group, for example your child's group.

Press the filter and pick one group. The feed and the pinned list then show only announcements aimed at that group, whole-school announcements are hidden while the filter is on.

To clear it, choose All groups at the top of the list or press the selected group again.

The owner and staff can pick any group in the school. Everyone else only sees the groups they belong to. When there are more than six groups, a Search groups box appears above the list.

If there are no groups to choose from, the filter is not shown at all.

Search groups box

Finds a group by name in the filter list.

Saves scrolling when the school has many groups.

Only shown when there are more than six groups. It matches any part of the name, ignoring capitals. If nothing matches you see "No groups match your search."

Announcement feed

The list of announcements that loads bit by bit as you scroll.

Shows the school's announcements you are allowed to see, newest first.

Pinned announcements are on top, followed by the rest by publish date. A few announcements load at first; when you reach the end the next ones load. While loading you see grey placeholder cards.

"Scroll for more" message

Shows that there are more announcements below.

Tells you to keep scrolling.

Appears at the end of the feed while there are announcements still to load. Scrolling to it loads the next ones.

"You're caught up." message

Shows you have reached the oldest announcement.

Confirms there are no more announcements to load.

Appears at the very end of the feed once every announcement you can see has loaded. It does not mean you have marked them as seen.

Announcement card

One announcement in the feed, author, title, text, audience, tags, files and buttons.

Shows the whole announcement right in the feed without opening it.

At the top are the author's initials and name, plus a pin icon if the announcement is pinned. Then come the title, when it was published (how many minutes or hours ago; for announcements older than a week, the date) and the audience.

The text keeps its line breaks, and website addresses in it become links that open in a new tab. Below the text are the tags, images and other files.

At the bottom are the buttons:

  • Mark as seen with the number of people who have seen it, for members;
  • Comments with the number of comments, for everyone;
  • Who's seen it: on the Announcements page in the admin area, for staff with the Publish announcements permission, instead of Mark as seen. There the pin, edit and delete buttons also appear at the top right of the card.

"Edited" label

Edited {{time}}

Shows that the announcement was changed after publishing, and when.

Lets readers know the content may differ from the original.

Appears next to the publish time once the author saves changes to the announcement. It shows when the last edit was made.

"Everyone" or group-name audience label

Shows who the announcement is for, the whole school or specific groups.

Tells you at a glance whether the announcement is for everyone or only certain groups.

A whole-school announcement shows a grey Everyone label. An announcement for specific groups shows one label with each group's name.

Announcement tags

Short words the author used to mark the topic of the announcement.

Help you see what an announcement is about at a glance, for example "competition" or "fees".

They appear as coloured labels below the text. The author adds and removes them when creating or editing. They are saved in lowercase.

Images in the announcement

The attached images, shown as a gallery in the card.

Lets you look at the announcement's photos without downloading them.

Up to three images are shown. If there are more, the third shows how many are left (for example "+2"). Press an image to open it full screen.

Image viewer

{{current}} of {{total}}

Shows the announcement's images full screen, one at a time.

Lets you look through all the announcement's images at a large size.

At the top you see the file name and which image you are on (for example "2 of 5"). Use Previous image and Next image or the ← and → keys to move between images; after the last one comes the first. Close it with Close image preview, the Esc key, or by pressing outside the image.

Files to download

The attached documents, video, audio, spreadsheets and archives in the announcement.

Lets you download files the school shared, a schedule, a consent form or the rules, for example.

Each file is on its own row with an icon for its type, its name and size. Press the row to download the file.

"No announcements yet" empty feed

What you see when the school has no announcements for you.

Shows that there is nothing to read instead of a blank page.

Below the heading it says "Published updates will appear here with their comments, seen count, and uploaded files." On the Announcements page in the admin area, staff with the Publish announcements permission also see the Create announcement button.

Create announcement button

Opens the new-announcement window from the empty feed.

Lets you publish the school's first announcement.

Only shown on the Announcements page in the admin area, and only to staff with the Publish announcements permission. Opens the Create announcement window.

"No announcements match this filter" message

What you see when the chosen group has no announcements.

Shows that the feed is empty because of the filter, not because there are no announcements at all.

Appears when you have picked a group in the filter and no announcement is aimed at it. Choose another group or All groups to see everything again.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see an announcement someone told me about?

It is probably aimed at a group that you or your child aren't in. Announcements for specific groups are only visible to members of those groups and to the school's staff.

Do I need to refresh to see a new announcement?

New announcements show up the next time you open the tab. If notifications are on, you also get a notification when an announcement for you is published.
