How it works

Comments let parents and students ask about an announcement, and let the school answer in one place, visible to everyone who can see the announcement.

Press Comments below the announcement. A window opens with the full announcement and its comments below, oldest first. The box for a new comment is at the bottom.

Who can comment: members of a group in the school and the owner. An employee who isn't in any group gets an error.

Notification: when someone comments, the announcement's author is notified (unless the author is the one commenting).

Deleting: only staff with the Publish announcements permission can delete comments, from the Announcements page in the admin area. Members can't delete a comment, not even their own.

Good to know

A comment can be up to 1000 characters.

If you want one of your comments removed, ask a staff member of the school to delete it.

On this screen

Comments button

Comments {{count}}

The button below the announcement with the comment count, which opens it with its comments.

Opens the announcement in its own window where you read and write comments.

Shown to everyone below every card. The number is the total number of comments.

Announcement and comments window

Comments

The full view of the announcement together with all its comments.

Brings the announcement, reactions and the conversation about it together.

At the top are the author, title, time and the Close button. Then come the audience, text, tags and files. Below them are Mark as seen (for everyone), the comment count, the file count and, for staff with the Publish announcements permission who open it from the Announcements page in the admin area, Who's seen it.

The Comments section shows the count and the list. At first as many comments load as fit on screen; scrolling down loads more ("Scroll for more comments", "Loading...") until you see "All comments loaded."

Close with Close, Esc, or by pressing outside the window.

Comment in the list

A single comment with its author, time and text.

Shows who wrote what and when.

Each comment shows the author's initials and name, how long ago it was written, and the text. Website addresses in the text become links. Your own comments carry a You label.

Comment author card

Brief information about the person who wrote the comment, children and groups.

Helps staff quickly see which parent or student is asking, without leaving the announcement.

Staff with the Publish announcements permission can press the author's name. A card opens with:

  • Children: registered children with their school, or "No children registered";
  • Groups: the groups in the school this person belongs to, or "Not in any groups";
  • a View profile link to their profile.

Press outside the card to close it. This is only available in the window opened from the Announcements page in the admin area.

Delete comment button

The bin icon next to a comment that deletes it.

Removes an inappropriate or unneeded comment.

Only shown to staff with the Publish announcements permission, next to every comment. It deletes the comment straight away, with no extra confirmation, and lowers the comment count. The button is only in the window opened from the Announcements page in the admin area.

"No comments yet." message

Shown when nobody has commented.

Tells you that you can write the first comment.

Appears in place of the list when the announcement has no comments. If comments can't be loaded, it says "Couldn't load comments." instead.

Leave a comment box

The box at the bottom of the window for a new comment.

Where you type your question or reply.

It must contain at least one non-space character and can be up to 1000 characters. Send with the button next to it or Enter. Once sent, the comment is added at the bottom of the list and the box clears. What you typed is lost if you close the window before sending.

Send comment button

Sends the comment.

Posts your comment under the announcement.

Disabled while the box is empty or the previous comment is still sending. If you aren't allowed to comment, an error message appears and the comment isn't added. The announcement's author is notified.
