How it works

When you have many groups, categories split them into folders so users and staff find the right group quickly.

Categories are managed from the Groups page of the admin dashboard with the Categories button, which opens the Group categories window. The page and the window are for people with the Manage groups permission (the owner always has it). Categories are no longer in Settings.

Once the school has at least one category, groups are shown in folders, one per category, in the order set in the window. Groups with no category go into an Uncategorised folder, which only appears when such groups exist. A school with no categories shows its groups as a plain list. The folders also show on the Groups tab of the school's page.

You choose a group's category in the Category field when creating or editing the group. Each group is in at most one category.

Good to know

Category names must be unique in the school, regardless of capital letters. Trying a duplicate shows “That didn't work. The name may already be in use.”

A name can be up to 100 characters. Spaces at the start and end are removed.

If you add the name of a removed category again, it is restored and groups still filed under it return to its folder.

On this screen

Group categories window

The school's category list and its controls.

Shows every category in the order they appear in the group folders.

The window is titled Group categories, and under the title it says "Folders that sort your groups on the groups page." Grey placeholder rows show while the list loads.

“No categories yet.” message

Shown when the school has no categories.

Tells you groups are shown without folders.

It disappears once you add the first category.

Category row

One category with its actions.

Lets you change or remove the category.

On a computer the icons appear when you point at the row; on a phone they are always visible.

Move up and Move down buttons

The arrows that change the order of categories.

Sets the order of folders on the Groups tab, for example your main discipline at the top.

Each press swaps the category with its neighbour. The up arrow is disabled for the first category and the down arrow for the last. The new order is saved immediately.

Rename button

The pencil icon for changing the category's name.

Renames the category, and every group in it stays in it.

The row turns into a box with the current name. Confirm with the Save tick or Enter, cancel with the Cancel X or Escape. An empty name isn't saved. On success it shows “Category renamed.”

Delete button

The bin icon for removing the category.

Removes the folder without deleting its groups.

The row first asks “Remove “<name>”?” with Delete and Cancel buttons. After you confirm, the category's groups become uncategorised and it shows “Category removed. Its groups are now uncategorised.”

Category name box and Add button

Creates a new category.

Adds a new folder for groups.

Type a name and press Add or Enter. The button is disabled while the box is empty. The new category is added at the bottom of the order. On success it shows “Category added.”
